Relic sand berms, formed by centuries of ice formation, rim the west shore.  When the pond freezes the ice expands, creating pressure along the shore and pushing material into a long mound, similar to the pile that forms ahead of a bulldozer blade.  Roots and vegetative matter help the berm retain its shape.
